NAKONDE DAM UNDERGOES MAINTENANCE AHEAD OF THE RAINY SEASON

The Ministry of Water Development has commenced maintenance works at Nakonde Dam as part of efforts to maintain critical water infrastructure ahead of the rainy season, with Chambeshi Water Supply and Sanitation Company (ChWSSC) collaborating with the team to support the exercise.
The works are being undertaken by the Department of Water Resources Development under the Muchinga Provincial Administration, which is responsible for the maintenance of dams and weirs in the province, and are funded by the Ministry.
The activities include clearing vegetation along the dam boundaries, sealing a leak and raising the spillway to increase the dam’s water-holding capacity. The vegetation-clearing exercise has so far involved ten working days of slashing.
As a user of the dam, ChWSSC is coordinating with the Department to facilitate the works and address any potential operational concerns should the activities affect the company’s operations.
ChWSSC recognises the importance of maintaining water infrastructure and appreciates the ministry’s efforts to safeguard the dam.
